The Mazda CX-9 is a family vehicle. But that doesn’t mean it has to be boring to drive. This three-row SUV is powered by the best Mazda has to offer in terms of powertrain and driving dynamics. This starts with the efficient and powerful four-cylinder 2.5 L turbocharged engine under the hood of every CX-9. This one makes up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. This is more than enough to provide riveting accelerations and provide plenty of towing capacity.
This engine is paired with Mazda’s state-of-the-art i-Activ all-wheel-drive system that uses dozens of sensors to measure road conditions, weather, driver input and more to provide optimal traction on all road surfaces.
The Volkswagen Atlas’ base engine offers much less performance. This 2.0 L turbocharged engine delivers 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is not only less powerful than the CX-9 engine, it also dramatically lags behind in terms of torque. This constitutes a strong disadvantage in terms of accelerations and overall drivability when compared to the CX-9.
The Atlas also offers an optional V6 engine. Although this one produces marginally more power than the CX-9’s engine, it is still far behind in terms of torque. Moreover, it is less efficient. With fuel consumption ratings of 13.8 L/100 km in the city and 9.2 L/100 km on the highway, the Atlas uses more resources than the CX-9, which shows exceptional ratings of 11.6 L/100 km in the city and 9.1 L/100 km on the highway.

Inside, the Volkswagen Atlas offers a very basic experience in terms of comfort and finish. Hard plastics dominate the cabin and the seating is not very comfortable. The CX-9, however, features upscale seating and refined textures that you will find in luxury SUVs.
