Mazda's engineers work tirelessly with the goal of creating the most eye-catching, exhilarating and safe vehicles on the road.
The 2020 Mazda3, Mazda3 Sport, Mazda6, Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-5 when equipped with optional front crash prevention technology, all receive the highest safety designation available from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) - the 2020 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award.
The Mazda CX-9 also receives the highest award, the 2020 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award (for CX-9 vehicles built after December 2019 and when equipped with optional front crash prevention technology)
The Mazda CX-30 also earns the 2020 TOP SAFETY PICK award when equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.
Mazda leads the industry with more awards than any other automaker.
In order to qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles must earn good ratings in each of the Institute's six crashworthiness evaluations:
- Moderate overlap front
- Drive-side small overlap front
- Passenger-side small overlap front
- Side
- Roof strength
- Head restraints and seats
Earning the 2020 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards is a great honor and reflects our unending commitment to safety for our owners. Mazda customers are at the forefront of our safety development and Mazda is dedicated to providing the most advanced safety technologies to give our customers a more joyful and confident driving experience.
Let's talk about Mazda's i-Activsense Safety Technology!
The i-Activsense is an umbrella term covering a series of advanced safety technologies. Mazda's active approach to safety, i-ACTIVSENSE uses milliwave radars and cameras to keep you in tune with your surroundings while keeping you focused on the road. Get maximum confidence and enjoyment out of your drive knowing these available systems are constantly working to alert you to potential hazards, avert collisions or reduce their severity when one is unavoidable. It's another example of our Jinba Ittai philosophy of creating oneness between car and driver.
Mazda's intelligent suite of available safety features includes:
- Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring (ABSM)
- Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA)
- Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
- Smart Brake Support Rear (SBS-R)
- Smart Brake Support Crossing (SBS-RC)
- Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function (MRCC with Stop & Go Function)
- Smart Brake Support (SBS)
- Pedestrian Detection (forward sensing)
- Distance Recognition Support System (DRSS)
- Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW)
- Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)
- Lane-Keep Assist System (LAS)
- High Beam Control System (HBC)
- Adaptive Front-Lighting System (ADS)
- Traffic Sign Recognition System (TSR)
- Driver Attention Alert (DAA)
(Note, not all i-Activsense features are available on all models. i-Activsense safety features are not a substitute for safe and attentive driving.)
A little more about the technologies, illustrated:
Blind Spot Monitoring System (BSM)
- Uses radar sensors to detect objects in your left or right blind spots and then alerts you with a warning light in the appropriate side mirror
Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS)
- Provides enhanced nighttime illumination by moving up to 15° in the direction of your turn, allowing you to spot potential hazards ahead.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
- When backing out from a parking spot, it will detect any vehicle approaching from the side and promptly alerts the driver
Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)
- Senses lane markings on the road and alerts the driver when it predicts the vehicle is doing to unintentionally depart from its lane
Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
- Adds to the warnings of the Lane Departure Warning System. When it senses a potential unintentional lane departure, it will perform minor steering corrections to help prevent your vehicle from exiting the lane.
Driver Attention Alert (DAA)
- Monitors the driver's steering and throttle inputs and lane position. When it recognizes driving behaviour suggesting fatigue or decreased attentiveness, it activates a warning sound and displays an alert in the LCD meter display
High Beam Control System (HBC)
- Automatically switches between high and low beams - helping the driver quickly spot pedestrians and other potential obstructions on the road at night
Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
- Detects objects ahead at low speeds and prepares the vehicle to stop by adjusting the brake pads closer to the disc. If no driver action is taken, the system automatically applies the brakes.
Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC)
- Monitors the speed of the vehicle ahead and automatically adjusts cruise control settings to maintain a safe headway distance
Forwards Obstruction Warning (FOW)
- Detects vehicles ahead and alerts the driver to an approaching risk of collision early enough for the driver to take evasive action
Smart Brake Support (SBS)
- Helps avoid or reduce the severity of collisions at mid to high speeds by detecting vehicles and obstacles as far as 200 metres ahead. When a risk of collision is detected, the system slows the car by automatically applying the brakes.
