The new Mazda CX-70
August 04 2022,
The Mazda CX-7 and RX-7 may have long since been usurped by the CX-5, but that hasn’t stopped Mazda from going back to the lucky number seven. Only this time, they’re adding a zero and getting prepared to release what looks like a hybridized two-row crossover. There’s nothing official yet, but Mazda is striving towards electrification and they’ve just revealed the CX-60, which gets powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) e-Skyactiv system.
It stands to reason that powertrain will be making its way to the CX-70, which will sit above the CX-50 and CX-60 in the line-up as Mazda continues to adopt a slightly new nomenclature for its models.
Like the CX-50, expect the CX-70 to get chunky styling features such as fender flares, big grille, more aggressive headlight design and unique wheel choices. The CX-50 received an all-new exterior colour when it debuted, so it will be interesting to see if the CX-70 gets a similar treatment.
Inside, expect to see the latest version of Mazda’s infotainment system complete with 10.3-inch widescreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, likely with a wireless connection.
While Mazda’s exterior styling has always been eye-catching, they’ve always been a bit more understated and buttoned-down inside, so we’re looking for more of that when the CX-70 makes its official debut.
AWD will likely come as standard in Canada, probably aided by Mazda’s propriety G-Vectoring Control chassis tech which helps keep their cars more level and responsive through turns and when under braking.
The CX-50 had the challenging job of creating space for itself in a line-up dominated by the similarly-sized CX-5 and it has done well to make a name for itself. The CX-70 might not have quite as much competition, so carving out its own niche at Mazda (and in the eyes of the buyer) will not be a problem.
