What There Is to Know About the Upcoming 2025 Mazda CX-70
January 24 2024,
Mazda is getting ready to launch a new SUV that will join its lineup later this year: the 2025 Mazda CX-70. Here is what we know about this upcoming model in the days leading up to its official unveiling.
A smaller CX-90
Everything seems to indicate that the CX-70 will be very similar to the current CX-90, with the lack of a third row of seats likely to be the main difference between both models. This means that the upcoming CX-70 could share its interior and exterior design language with the large CX-90, which represented a substantial step up in terms of quality over the previous Mazda models in this category. Thus, the CX-70 is expected to be positioned as a more premium alternative in the mid-size five-seater SUV category than most of its competitors, a position that has been adopted by many new Mazda models in recent years.
Known powertrains
This similarity between the upcoming 2025 Mazda CX-70 and the current CX-90 won’t be limited to the cosmetic aspects, since both models will share the same powertrains. Indeed, we know that the CX-70 will benefit from the new 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain that was introduced with the CX-90 last year. In addition, the CX-70 will be offered with a second powertrain option that is likely to be the same plug-in hybrid technology as the PHEV version of the CX-90, which means we can expect to see a Skyactiv 2.5L four-cylinder engine paired with an electrified system under the hood of the new model. While horsepower and torque figures for the CX-70 have not been announced, the gasoline engine generates up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque in the CX-90, while the hybrid system offers 323 horsepower and the same level of torque. The all-electric range of the CX-70 PHEV is also likely to be longer than the 42 kilometres possible with the heavier CX-90.
A high level of features and technologies
The 2025 Mazda CX-70 should continue the automaker’s move upmarket that was initiated a few years ago by offering more features and a higher standard of design than its competitors. In this regard, the CX-70 will probably mirror the CX-90, which means there will probably be a Signature model offered. This trim level, already offered on the CX-5, reached new heights with the CX-90 and is expected to be similar in the CX-70. This means we could see items such as Nappa leather, genuine wood appliqués, stitched cloth decorative panels, and metal brightwork be used to give the cabin of the CX-70 a more expensive look and feel.
A welcome addition to the Mazda lineup
The addition of the 2025 Mazda CX-70 to the brand’s lineup will be welcomed by many buyers since it is expected to provide a middle ground between compact and three-row SUVs from Mazda, thus answering directly to those who think the CX-5 and CX-50 are too small, but don’t need the added passenger capacity of the CX-90.
Stay tuned for more details about the upcoming 2025 Mazda CX-70, which should be unveiled in the coming days.
